Le début: Raffa

I have been researching and implementing green living tips for 4-5 months now, so it's time I organised my thoughts a little. I have read a lot of books and gone in several directions, which I hope this blog will allow me to translate into words so I can share my acquired knowledge.

Let's start with acknowledging the root of all this, which is Raffa's blog: http://raffa.grandmenage.info/
Raffa is this incredibly stimulating Belgian lady who started a blog ages ago with advice about how to make your own cleaning products with bicarbonate of soda, vinegar and essential oils. I'd come across her blog back in 2009 when I was doing some research on Galen's cold cream (cérat de Galien) for my baby boy who had some eczema. At that point, we were using washable nappies and Ecover dishwasher tablets and washing-up liquid, but had just bought a tumble dryer. (That was the deal when I found out I was pregnant. No regrets, I'm afraid.)
I didn't think anymore of it until I started sprucing up my housework methods, now that I am a stay-at-home mum. I started with some magazine cuttings I'd kept over the years, notably old-school methods using bicarb, vinegar, salt and lemon juice. I re-read Kim & Aggie's How Clean is Your House? but was put off by their use of bleach.

And then I went back on Raffa's blog. By then, I had ditched the Ecover products and wasn't using the washable nappies much. But reading that blog gave me a good kick up the backside and a lot of interesting routes to investigate. I printed Raffa's recipe book and started with her olive oil-lemon juice furniture polish mixture. It worked wonders on our neglected oak desk. It also worked wonders on my motivation.

Merci, Raffa!
